From the days it was called Mardi Gras, the annual festival conducted by IIT Madras on its vast and serene campus is forgotten by none who attend it, whether they participate or come to witness the spectacle. Saarang is conducted during the final week of January, and made possible every year by the determined efforts of nearly a thousand students. Drawing more than 20,000 people across all ages, Saarang sets the standard as far as cultural festivals go. With an expected footfall of 50,000, this five-day festival is the traditional meeting place for the young and those young at heart. Saarang is characterised with the days jam-packed with events and competitions, and then the nights where, under the title of Professional Shows, the best professional artistes from India and abroad enthrall the packed Open Air Theater at IIT-M.

Saarang 2009 promises to be bigger and better than ever before this time around. With new events including The Fourth Estate, Animation Film Making and Funny Bone, as well as an array of workshops to suit all tastes, Saarang this year reaches out to a larger section of the crowd. As has been described below, Saarang this year has gone out of its way to be truly unique.

This year being the Golden Jubilee year of IITM, Saarang 2009 has gone all out to explore frontiers that no Saarang before has. It is in this context that we have a totally new lineup of happenings set up for you, and by you, we mean all of you. Apart from our proshows and events and workshops and the like, this year, you can look forward to…

2. Theater Fest – A gathering of professional theater troupes from around the country, with performances of the nature that the Chennai theater scene has yet to experience.
3. Madras-Chennai Express – A trip down memory lane, (or should we say Mount Road) featuring exhibitions, documentaries and most of all, panelists drawn from the who’s who of the city. If you’ve lived in “Chennai” and never got to see “Madras”, this is your chance.
4. Filmmakers’ Lecture Series – Four days, four directors, four lectures, one art. Come over and listen to celebrated directors reveal the science behind the art of movie-making.
